Pfeiffer Wines is a family owned and operated winery, located within historic Rutherglen, Victoria (just 45km west of Wondonga and 276km north-east of Melbourne). The winery was built in 1895 by Monsieur Joseph Gassies, whose vineyards were on the opposite banks of Sunday Creek but for the last 30 years it has been where Pfeiffer Wines has produced a great range of wines.
“Pfeiffer Wines produce premium, handcrafted wines of elegance – crisp whites, full-bodied reds and the internationally extolled Muscats and Topaques; luscious, intense fortified wines which are the heritage of the Australian Wine Industry”
There are too many wines to mention here but when we visited during January we bought these wines:
- Pfeiffer Merlot, 2012: “A rich, full styled Merlot which displays lovely silky texture and fine long tannins”
- Pfeiffer Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012: “A flavoursome, yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with lovely berry fruit and long, soft tannins”
- Pfeiffer Christopher’s VP, 2012: “This is a wonderfully textured wine, with Swiss milk chocolate and red berry flavours of great persistence“- a blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) grapes.
The wines here are fantastic and many are quite affordable at under $20. The great price does not compromise the quality however and Pfeiffer Wines has been a 5 star James Halliday Winery since 2010. In addition to this, Pfeiffer Wines has won 30+ trophies and over 400 medals and in 2009 Jen Pfeiffer was awarded The Wine Society Young Winemaker Of The Year – Sommeliers Choice Award: well-deserved in my opinion.
Aside from a visit to the cellar door, a wander around the property is a must. Pfeiffer Wines offer a picnic or cheese platter on their famous Sunday Bridge, as well as other events throughout the year.
As Pfeiffer Wines say:
“Pfeiffers Pfine Wine Pfor Pfine Pfood and Pfabulous Pfolk”
I’ve always considered myself to be Pfabulous…
