Just 10 minutes south of Launceston on the Tamar Valley wine route, this relatively new wine venture has achieved in excess of 14 trophies and 170 medals over it’s 8 year history.
Established in 2007 by Josef ‘Joe’ Chromy, his history within the Tasmanian wine industry of the long precedes this newish venture. His presence in the Tasmanian food and wine industry has seen him come from meat and small goods production to having owned and developed some of Tasmania’s leading wineries including Rochecombe (now Bay of Fires), Jansz, Heemskerk and Tamar Ridge.
“Josef fled his war-torn Czech village in 1950 as a penniless 19-year-old after eleven years of Nazi and Soviet occupation. He escaped across borders guarded by minefields, dogs and soldiers, suffering five months of privation before immigrating to Australia.”
Josef Chromy Wines
The wines offered are under three labels which have distinct characteristics:
Pepik: This is the traditional nickname given to men named Josef in the Czech Republic. This is our more informal casual range, suited for everyday drinking.
Josef Chromy: A mid-range collection that can be cellared or consumed straight away.
Zdar: A higher end collection which uses the best quality grapes and wine making and represents a limited range.
I picked up some of the following:
Zdar 2011 Pinot Noir: Which is more deep and dark that a usual Pinot Noir and has cherry, chocolate and smokey notes.
Josef Chromy 2014 Botrytis: A lovely dessert wine with flavours of orange marmalade and stone fruit characteristics
Pepik Sparkling Rosé: Fresh berry flavours with a nice, clean finish
The winery is to visit and is listed in the Top Ten Cellar Doors in Australia. There is lots to do aside from the traditional wine tasting experience. Josef Chromy Wines have restaurant with a delicious meals from chef, Matt Adams but also hold events such as Jazz on the Green, winery tours, wine and chocolate tasting, wine education and even Fly Casting lessons.
