If you’re a thrifty being like myself and want to save a few dollars on getting to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, you can add on a few extra kilometres and take the Merritts Nature Walk tot he top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. While a bit strenuous (best not to do this one with dodgy knees and ankles), you meander your way alongside the Thredbo River, through forest, across mountain bike tracks and up towards alpine vegetation.
From the Valley Terminal, you will continue alongside the Thredbo River and follow the steps on the right hand side of the bobsled. The track which involves walking through trees will head over towards Merritts Creek where you will cross over a footbridge.
After the footbridge, turn left and follow the walk up through Alpine Ash forest. You will cross over an access road and then head into Snow Gum forest. Follow the signposts that direct you along the track where you will cross some winter ski runs (Bunny Walk and Village Trail) and head alongside Snowgums Chairlift.
At the top of Snowgums chairlift, follow the trail and at about the 2 hour mark (depending on how fast you are and how often you stop to take photos), you will start to get close to the top and see visitors on their way up via the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift.
Pass underneath the chairlift and walk on the left hand side toward the gravel path at the top. Once you arrive at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, head to Eagles Nest (Australia’s highest restaurant) for a nice cold Kosciuszko Pale Ale. Continue to the summit via Kosciuszko Walk or return the same way you came.
